Atlanta’s Thriving Public Relations Industry
Last week, the Georgia Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) held its annual Real World PR Conference, a day of workshops, résumé critiques and other career-advancing activities for public relations students. The conference also included the opportunity for students to briefly meet with top Atlanta public relations firms. As I spoke with dozens of PR students from all over the southeast, I was happy to learn that they see Atlanta as a great place for public relations jobs.
Atlanta and the surrounding area have a couple dozen public relations firms, including local offices for a few national agencies. According to O’Dwyer’s, Atlanta is home to three of the top 100 independently-owned PR firms (including Brandware), more than much larger cities like Los Angeles and Miami.
Atlanta’s thriving business community helps sustain its public relations industry. Several Fortune 500 companies – titans like Coca-Cola, Home Depot, Delta Airlines and UPS – are headquartered in Atlanta. Neighboring communities are home to highly-recognized brands like Chick-fil-A and Glock. Nearby Duluth, GA successfully courted NCR, which had been an economic cornerstone in my hometown of Dayton, OH for more than 120 years (I get really dirty looks at Thanksgiving). Thanks to the prolific Tyler Perry and shows like The Walking Dead (among others), Atlanta has become a focal for TV & cinema production.
Speaking of TV, Turner Broadcasting and Cox Enterprises also help make Atlanta a great place for public relations professionals. These massive media conglomerates have multiple outlets (CNN, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, etc.) that can be pitched on behalf of clients. Plus, there are plenty of opportunities for meeting and networking with journalists of all levels – critical for developing a broad professional network.
The students I spoke with all had great questions, and I believe it’s important for us to take the time to answer them. Students who are considering Atlanta for PR jobs are encouraged to check out our monthly PR Social. It’s a great chance to pick our brains and get some experience-based insight on what it takes to make it.
